“My name is Thomas, I’m 36 years old and I’ve been doing sports all my life. I discovered the triathlon 9 years ago and went through it in the classic sense. In the first few years I only did people and sprint distances, then Olympic distances were added until I dared to do the first middle distance in 2013.
Last year the desire arose to finish a long distance. Up to this point I have always trained as I felt like it and that wasn’t enough for me for the start at a long distance. I was able to get to know Roy a little earlier and with him also his attitude to triathlon and his way of leading athletes. That really impressed me and so the decision to let him coach me was made quickly.
Roy shows that triathlon is more than just swimming, cycling and running. He understands his athletes on different levels and so he was able to plan the training sessions very individually for me. This allowed me to reconcile everyday life with sport and ‘normal’ life didn’t have to suffer from the training effort.
Like many athletes, swimming is not my favorite discipline. However, regular training in the swimming channel has led to making a lot of small progress and gaining confidence in the first discipline with little effort. The guided training sessions with Roy on the bike and on the track were also extremely motivating and I always went home with new inputs that I could then implement in the next units. This has repeatedly led to noticeable progress and I never lost the fun of training. As mentioned, I have been doing endurance sports for a long time and have trained accordingly. Nevertheless, all training units were new to me and I was able to gain a lot of valuable experience, such as watt-controlled training, performance tests or correct pacing.
I was then able to finish my first Ironman in Frankfurt exactly as I had imagined. I never had problems with muscles, energy supply or negative thoughts. Thanks to the targeted preparation, the whole day was pure joy and I was able to enjoy it from start to finish. I can say it was the best sporting day I’ve ever had.
Thank you Roy for everything!”
